    Default DT "Guitar Tunings" Library

    Hey!

Just got back from some playing and I thought about different guitar tunings! As for me, I own only one guitar and this is a JEM with FR! So changing tunings is like a change of seasons…taking much time ....

So it'd be cool to know which DT/LTE/JP related songs are in which tuning and if you need 6 or 7 string guitars!

    So I'll start:

    Scenes From A Memory

    Overture 1928
    6 String - Standard E Tuning

    Fatal Tragedy
    6 String - Standard E Tuning

    Home
    6 String - Drop D

    Anna Lee
    6 String - Standard E tuning

    Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Acoustic w/ capo at 5th fret

    Misunderstood
    7-string electric
Silhouette Bass 1 octave lower than standard guitar
    Acoustic - Standard E Tuning

    The Great Debate
6 string - Drop D used in 12/8 section, standard tuning in rest of song

    Solitary Shell
    12-string acoustic
    6-string electric - Standard E Tuning

What? A Nightmare to Remember, A Rite of Passage, Wither, and The Count of Tuscany are all 6 strings! Or am I wrong? Or I just misunderstood something?

Here's a list covering everything from DT, LTE and Suspended Animation. I'm pretty sure it's complete and accurate, and there's some form of evidence (or direct info from JP) for most of the things here being what they are vs. something else. If a song's not listed, all the guitars are 6-strings in standard tuning.

    Awake:
Caught In A Web: 7-string electric, 6-string acoustic
The Mirror: 7-string electric, 6-string acoustic
    Lie: 7-string
Nashville tuning (3rd-6th strings one octave higher than standard) acous. doubling standard acous. in sections of The Silent Man, possibly other songs

A Change Of Seasons: 7-string acoustic & electric, 6-string electric & nylon string acoustic

    Falling Into Infinity:
New Millennium: 7-string electric, possibly acoustic with the 1st & 6th strings detuned to C# doubling the synth part during verse (clip of JP putting guitar into this tuning on some disc)
    Just Let Me Breathe: 7-string
Anna Lee has a single low Eb note (7-string or Drop D), majority is standard tuned 6-string
12-string sounds in You Not Me, Peruvian Skies, Burning My Soul, Anna Lee, Trial of Tears. Possibly not real 12-string for all; JP said in an interview "On the album Falling into Infinity, which Kevin produced, he had a guitar synth that I plugged into and did some 12-string things and stuff like that." http://www.bossus.com/bugonline/feat...rt=petrucci_p4

    Scenes From a Memory:
Overture 1928: Low D notes in intro (7-string or Drop D), rest is standard 6-string
    Home: Drop D
    The Dance Of Eternity: 7-string

    Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence:
    The Glass Prison: 7-string
Blind Faith: Silhouette Bass in A tuning, standard 6-string electric, acoustic w/ capo at 5th fret
Misunderstood: 7-string electric, Silhouette Bass 1 octave lower than standard guitar, standard-tuned acoustic
The Great Debate: Drop D used in 12/8 section, standard tuning in rest of song
The Test That Stumped Them All: 7-string rhythm parts during & after solos
Solitary Shell: 12-string acoustic, 6-string electric

    Train of Thought:
    As I Am: 6-string, C tuning
    This Dying Soul: 7-string
    Endless Sacrifice: 6-string, D tuning
Honor Thy Father: 6-string, C tuning
Stream Of Consciousness: 6-string, Eb tuning
In The Name Of God: 6-string, C tuning

    Octavarium:
The Root Of All Evil: 6-string, Eb tuning
These Walls: Silhouette Bass, A tuning (preceding interlude features this guitar with 6th string detuned approx. 1 octave, near slack, and eventually tuned up)
    I Walk Beside You: 6-string, D tuning
Panic Attack: Silhouette Bass, Bb tuning
    Never Enough: 6-string, D tuning
    Octavarium: 12-string acoustic, 6-string acoustic & electric

    Systematic Chaos:
In The Presence of Enemies Pt. 1: Drop D for chords & bar dive at 0:04-0:22, standard 6-string otherwise
Forsaken: D tuning for electric, standard-tuned acoustic
The Dark Eternal Night: 7-string & 6-string elec.
    Repentance: 7-string & 6-string electric, 6-string acoustic

    Black Clouds and Silver Linings
    A Nightmare to Remember: 6-string, C tuning
    A Right of Passage: 6-string, D tuning
Wither: 6-string, Bb tuning (27.5" scale)
The Shattered Fortress: 7-string electric, 6-string acoustic (and possibly electric on parts not requiring low B--just the first harmonized lead)

    Liquid Tension Experiment 2:
    Acid Rain: 7-string

    Suspended Animation:
Jaws Of Life & Tunnel Vision: 7-string
Animate-Inanimate: E-tuned Silhouette Bass (octave lower than standard guitar) & standard 6-string electric

I hate to detune my guitar and there are quite a lot songs that requiere that. Damn.
